Robadeys, now and then

the coat of arms

As the SSGF explains it, Robadey comes from the german name Hrodbald (hrod- "glory" et -bald "daring"), followed by the suffix -et, then declined in -ey. Formerly written Robade (1431). This name could also be an hypochoristic of the name Robert (variant: Robard, Robardey, Robardet).

The coat of arms is described in the Archives of Canton Fribourg:
D'azur à un pin de sinople, fruité d'argent, flûté au naturel et mouvant d'une montagne de trois coupeaux de sinople, un écureuil d'or brochant sur la verdure du pin. (not translated)

The Family comes from Lessoc, in Canton Fribourg, in Switzerland.
The first mentions of the name can be found in the archives of the 15th century. The Family was burgher of Arconciel, Romont, Granvillard, Cartigny, Lausanne et Geneva.
Following the immigration wave to South America, some Robadeys did move to Brasil between 1819 and 1831. Lots of members of Robadey Family now live in Brasil, in particular in Cantagalo.
But most of the Robadeys did stay in Switzerland. About 80 Robadey families live here, most of them in Canton Fribourg.
